The Cloud’s Future is Inside, Not Out

I’m not a fan of the latest, overused, generalized, misunderstood term: “cloud computing” (see Cloud Computing the New Hosting Buzzword).

Don’t get me wrong, I think the concept of cloud computing is the future.  Done, it’s a given.  We even have a “cloudmaster” as a consultant on staff now.  What I don’t think, however, is that I would want to base my entire business off services that are provided from someone else’s cloud, somewhere…out there…running on…something.

Enter Cloudbursting and Private Clouds (Utility Computing).  Now we’re talking.

Finally people are starting to make noise about how the principles of utility computing can be used to supplement existing infrastructure for overflow or as the basis for internal clouds.

For more on Cloudbursting see Jeff Barr from Amazon Web Services blog entry.  Excellent articles relating to bringing the cloud “inside” are Ken Oestreich’s Creating a Generic (Internal) Cloud Architecture and Bring Cloud Computing Inside by Bill Coleman, both of Cassatt Corp.
